Wrapping Up ITA Men's Team Indoor; Brugues Now No. 1 in Latest Singles Rankings

    My weekly column for The Tennis Recruiting Network is an overview of the ITA Men's Team Indoor last weekend.

    I've also put together a slide show, based on the men's All-Tournament team announced yesterday by the ITA, and would like to thank my husband, Paul Ballard, for all his hard work behind the lens in the challenging indoor conditions. The women's All-tournament team can be found in this ITA release.

    There was a lot of news from the ITA in the past two days. Not only did they release the All-tournament teams, but also this announcement that the rankings will have a new sponsor (Fila having bowed out), the Campbell Soup Company.

    In those rankings, the Northwestern women retained their No. 1 position in the team rankings, and Wildcat Maria Mosolova managed to hold on to her top spot in the singles, barely edging Clemson's Ani Mijacika, who is a fraction of a point behind. Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State are ranked No. 1 in doubles.

    The men's rankings did shuffle, with Virginia assuming the top spot in the team rankings, followed by Georgia and Ohio State. Tulsa's Arnau Brugues has claimed the top spot in the singles, with Steve Forman and Cory Parr of Wake Forest ranked No. 1 in doubles.

Plaza Cup Wrap; Duval and Vickery Play for Teen Tennis Title; Australian Open Junior Qualifying Underway

    In my weekly article for The Tennis Recruiting Network, I wrap up the competition at the Tennis Plaza Cup, which concluded on Monday. If you didn't get a chance to read the daily reports, this article should provide an overview of the three days of action at Salvadore Park.

    The USTA 14-and-under groups left for Europe last week, with newly hired national coaches Andres Pedroso (boys) and Kathy Rinaldi (girls) accompanying the teams. The girls, even without Madison Keys, have a very strong team, as evidenced by their results this week in the Aegon Teen Tennis tournament in Bolton, England. On Friday, Bollettieri students Sachia Vickery and Vicky Duval will give us the final we expected in the Junior Orange Bowl, but didn't get when Korean qualifier So Ra Lee beat Vickery in the semifinals. At Teen Tennis, Vickery is the top seed and Duval is seeded No. 8. Brooke Austin of the U.S., seeded 16th, lost to Vickery in the semifinals. Unseeded Luca Corinteli of the U.S. reached the semifinals, where he lost to No. 6 seed Evan Hoyt of Great Britain in two tiebreakers.     The acceptances for Les Petits As, which starts tomorrow with the first round of qualifying, are available at the tournament website. Vickery and Duval are in the main draw, with Austin and Nadia Echeverria Alam in qualifying. Madison Keys did not make the trip, revamping her schedule after her win at The Coffee Bowl. The two U.S. boys in the main draw are Joseph DiGiulio and Nikko Madregallejo. Corinteli and Roy Lederman are listed as competing in the qualifying, but Lederman suffered an injury at Teen Tennis.


    In Australia, the ITF Grade 1 at Nottinghill has produced some big surprises, with top seed and Orange Bowl champion Yuki Bhambri of India going out in the second round to unseeded Justin Eleveld of the Netherlands, who has reached the boys final against No. 4 seed Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain. No. 3 seed Laura Robson, playing her first tournament since injuring her stomach muscle at the Orange Bowl, lost in the quarterfinals to unseeded Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands. No. 8 seed Yana Buchina upset top seed and world No. 1 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand in the quarterfinals, and will play No. 10 seed Nadiya Kichenok of Ukraine in the final. Kichenok defeated No. 2 seed Elena Bogdan of Romania in the semifinals. It was not a good tournament for the U.S., with only Ester Goldfeld winning a main draw match. Eddie Herr champion and No. 4 seed Lauren Embree lost in the first round, as did Beatrice Capra, the No. 11 seed, and qualifier Elizabeth Begley. Harry Fowler, the only boy from the U.S. playing in Australia, also lost in the first round, as the 16th seed.

    The opening round of qualifying for the Australian Open Juniors is complete, with Alexandra Cercone of Florida needing a victory on Friday to reach the main draw. Monica Yajima, Noel Scott and Begley lost in the first round.

Junior Orange Bowl Wrap and Slide Show

    Due to the holidays and my travel, my weekly column for The Tennis Recruiting Network hasn't been in its customary Thursday spot consistently, with today's Junior Orange Bowl wrap just one instance of some of the shifting necessary the past two months. January should put us back on the regular timetable, except for the first installment, which will be the December Aces, and will appear on Friday January 2.

    The Junior Orange Bowl slide show is below, and beneath that, the Animoto version, uploaded to YouTube. Due to bandwidth limitations in the hotels in Florida, I wasn't able to do videos of the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl, but I hope to upload some of the short videos I took of the Dunlop Orange Bowl finals in the next couple of weeks.

Eddie Herr Wrap; Australian Wild Card Playoff; Vote for ZooTennis as Tennis Blog of the Year

    My weekly post for The Tennis Recruiting Network is a roundup of last week's Eddie Herr. I hope it provides an overall review of the highlights of that always exciting and chaotic week; for my more in-depth daily coverage, go to "older posts" or the category entitled International Tournaments. I hope to get a slide show up when I get a few hours off, but an Eddie Herr photo gallery is also up for viewing today on The Tennis Recruiting Network.

    I spoke with Jay Berger, the USTA's new head of Men's Tennis for Elite Player Development early this week, and he told me the Australian Open main draw wild card playoff is scheduled for next weekend in Boca Raton, with John Isner, Wayne Odesnik, Donald Young and Jesse Levine vying for the wild card that the USTA exchanges with Tennis Australia every year. I don't yet have the information on the women's wild card, but will try to get it later in the week.

ITA Indoor Wrap and Bids for 2009; First US Futures of 2009 on Clay, Knoxville Challenger News

    With the flurry of activity over Early Signing Week (which ends Wednesday) at the Tennis Recruiting Network, I wasn't in my usual Thursday slot last week and won't be this week either. But you can find my wrap of the ITA National Indoor there today. Although I don't always have the luxury of thinking about a tournament for several days before writing about it, it does produce a slightly different perspective.

    The ITA has announced on its website that bids are now being accepted for the 2009 Indoor, with a deadline of Dec. 15, which is the final day of the ITA Coaches Convention in Naples, Fla.

    The 2009 Pro Circuit calendar for the men has undergone several changes in the past few months. Initially the first two Futures in 2009 were scheduled for Puerto Rico, on hard courts, but that was changed, first to TBA, and now to three $10,000 men's Futures in South Florida. Boca Raton will host the first, on Jan. 12, Hollywood follows on Jan. 19 and Plantation closes that stretch on Jan. 26. And, as was alluded to in the Doug Robson story on the changes in High Performance in USA Today, they will be on clay, not on hard courts as they traditionally have been.
    McEnroe already has asked that more of the USTA-funded lower-tier Futures and Challenger events be put on clay, even if in the short term that makes it harder for upstart U.S. players to earn valuable ranking points.
    The $50,000 Challenger scheduled for January 26 will be in Carson, Calif. on hard courts. The $15,000 Mobile Futures has been moved to March 30.

Pan-American Wrap; Koz at the U.S. Open; Georgia Bulldog Update

    My weekly story for the Tennis Recruiting Network is a wrap-up of the ITF B1 Pan-American Closed, and although it is the biggest ITF tournament in the U.S. until the Grade 1 Eddie Herr in December, there are three U.S. events in between--the El Paso Grade 5 going on now, the Grade 2 in South Carolina next week and the Grade 4 at the Evert Academy the following week. The acceptances for those two are available here, and as of now, the South Carolina tournament looks to have a girls field equal to, if not better, than Tulsa.

    Dave Kozlowski, a/k/a the Koz, was at the U.S. Open last month and his show, which includes brief interviews with Madison Brengle, CoCo Vandeweghe, Melanie Oudin, Devin Britton and Grigor Dimitrov, as well as Patrick McEnroe and Paul Roetert of USTA High Performance, can be watched online at indietennis.com.


    It was confirmed in Tulsa that Matt Reid will not be joining the Georgia Bulldogs in January, as he has decided to pursue the professional path instead. He was a semifinalist in a $10,000 tournament in Australia last week, and has reached the quarterfinals of this week's Australian Futures, as has 16-year-old Bernard Tomic.

    The RedandBlack profiled Georgia's two outstanding additions to the women's team, Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, in advance of Friday's Regional in Athens. Gullickson is the top seed, based on her performance so far in the fall, but unfortunately Gilchrist is injured and will not play the rest of this year, according to the article.

Scattered Thoughts on the US Open Junior Championships

    It's a good time to review the (mostly) dry U.S. Open Junior tournament, as it brings back memories of the sunshine and blue skies. The storm I mentioned yesterday did produce a tornado in nearby Paw Paw, but Kalamazoo escaped without damage or power outages. It's been rain, rain and more rain, however, with five inches in the last 24 hours, and we are now approaching 11 inches for the month.

    A lot of the items I heard or observed in New York didn't make it into my daily posts, so I've done a kind of shorthand here on some items you may find interesting. If you were there, feel free to chime in with additions, comments, opinions, whatever.

US Open Junior Wrap; Bollettieri's Legacy; More US Open Junior Talk

    I'm far from finished with the U.S. Open Junior Championships, despite spending the past four days working on stories and photos about them. My weekly post for The Tennis Recruiting Network is a synopsis of the tournament with a particular focus on the path to the finals for Vandeweghe and Britton.

    There are transcripts available for all four of the interviews with the junior finalists at ASAP Sports.

    Britton's plans for the future are also mentioned in this feature that appeared yesterday in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

    Britton has been at IMG/Bollettieri's for three years, and although he isn't mentioned in this espn.com piece on Nick Bollettieri by Greg Garber, several juniors are. No longer a junior, Donald Young also is getting advice from Bollettieri these days. I saw Nick at many junior matches last week: Rhyne Williams vs. Ryan Harrison; Britton vs. Bradley Klahn; Filip Krajinovic vs. Jarmere Jenkins, keenly interested in the tennis technique and strategy, despite what he says in this story. I only hope I am able to see half as many tennis matches as Nick Bollettieri in my lifetime, and to enjoy them all as much as he does.

Grass Court Roundup; Wimbledon Qualifying Complete; Do Tennis Players See Better?

    My weekly article for The Tennis Recruiting Network looks back on last week's Grass Courts, and, I hope for those of you who didn't follow my daily reports from the Philadelphia Cricket Club, it will provide a written synopsis of the tournament to go with the slideshow I posted on Tuesday.

    Wimbledon qualifying was completed today, and unlike the French qualifying, which I was too busy to follow during the NCAAs, I kept close watch on the proceedings. Two U.S. men, Kevin Kim and Jesse Levine, made the main draw in singles, while Tripp Phillips and KJ Hippensteel and Amer Delic and Brendan Evans qualified in doubles. There were no U.S. women making it through singles qualifying, but Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears will play in the ladies doubles. The only junior to qualify was three-time Junior Grand Slam winner Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. In its inimitable fashion, the Wimbledon website has provided in-depth coverage of all four days of qualifying, with a live blogger from the Roehampton site every day. Guy McCrea, with whom I did a brief Radio Wimbledon podcast last year, is back on the job and provides this podcast on the final day of qualifying. I'll be listening to Guy much more this year, as I'm not going to make the trip. For the complete list of qualifiers, click here. The draw will be revealed on Friday morning.

    And finally, while I was catching up on the news I'd missed while in Philadelphia, I found this story from Science Daily about the visual skills of tennis players. Although there is something of a chicken-or-egg dilemma about the results-- "It could either be the case that tennis improves temporal processing or that better temporal processing allows people to become better tennis players," according to the report-- it is still interesting to discover where tennis players excel visually, and where they don't.

Easter Bowl Wrap; Brengle Named to Fed Cup Team; Cohen and Keys Profiles

    My Easter Bowl wrap-up is this week's post for The Tennis Recruiting Network. I know it isn't always possible to read my daily updates from tournaments, so these look-backs help to sum up the tournament in one place at one time.

    It was announced yesterday that Madison Brengle will be a part of the U.S. Fed Cup team facing Russia later this month in Moscow. Unfortunately, she isn't joined by Davenport, Harkelroad or either of the Williams sisters, so it will be tough going for the U.S. The News Journal has Brengle's thoughts on representing the U.S. here.
    (A widely circulated AP story had Brengle as an amateur, but that was wrong, and I believe has been corrected now.)

    Frequent commenter Scott sent me a link to this story from the Florida Alligator that profiles Julia Cohen, and delves into her plans for the future.

    And Play Tennis Florida, a new magazine serving the members of the USTA Florida section, features this story on Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl 12s champion Madison Keys, who is on their April cover.

Mobile Wrap; Illinois High School Tennis Minus Evan King

    My weekly post for The Tennis Recruiting Network wraps up the USTA 18s Spring Nationals in Mobile. It was interesting to hear, late in the tournament, how many players feel that they are not able to play both Mobile and the Easter Bowl, due to the amount of school they miss. Mobile finalist Lauren Embree will be playing the Easter Bowl this year, but last year she did not, in order to play high school tennis (unsurprisingly, she won the state championships). This year, she is not playing high school tennis, because the Easter Bowl conflicts with the district competition. The word from the LA Times is that Ryan Thacher (who is not eligible for the Easter Bowl) is once again playing on Harvard-Westlake's team.

    Evan King is another high school junior that is not playing for his school, now that he has taken up residence at the USTA Training Center in Boca Raton. This story, from the Chicago Tribune, discusses King's possible successor at the top of the Illinois high school heap, Denis Bogatov. Although there are some errors, (since when is the USTA academy in Coral Gables, Fla?) the discussion of Bogatov's year at an academy and his future ambitions is worth reading.

Tennis Plaza Cup wrap; Puig competes in Fed Cup; Mountford Leaves LTA

    My weekly post today at The Tennis Recruiting Network is a wrapup of the Tennis Plaza Cup. One of the winners, 14-year-old Monica Puig, the girls' 16s champion, was named to Puerto Rico's Fed Cup team and has been in Colombia, where the Americas Zone Group 1 round robin is taking place. Puerto Rico is 2-0, having swept Paraguay and Uruguay the past two days and Puig saw action in doubles against Paraguay. Next up is Brazil, also 2-0 and that tie will decide who gets the opportunity to play the winner of the Colombia-Canada match in the other round robin for a spot in the World Group II competition in April. The (sometimes incomplete) results are here.

    Bill Mountford, the former director of tennis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, has announced his departure from the LTA, less than a year after accepting the position as head of Coach Relations and Competition in Roehampton. Head of the LTA, Roger Draper, had a brief announcement about Mountford's resignation on the LTA's website.

    But Neil Harman of The Times gives a little bit more insight into Mountford's decision. Near the end of a story on Andy Murray's decision to withdrawal from the British Davis Cup tie in Argentina, Harman writes:
    The news follows hard on the heels of the departure from the LTA of Bill Mountford, who was imported from the United States to oversee the junior development and coaching structure pinpointed by Stuart Smith, the LTA president, as “our No 1 priority” in his annual address last month.

    Mountford’s shock move is the highest-profile departure from the Tennis Leadership Team established after Roger Draper’s return to the LTA as chief executive from Sport England two years ago. In his brief tenure, during which he had hardly begun to scratch away at the surface of his enormous task, Mountford had earned huge respect for his diligence, knowledge and approachability.

    Where his decision to depart – for undisclosed reasons, although he was said to be increasingly at odds with what he perceived as a lack of direction – leaves the governing body is anyone’s guess. The development of a structure in which coaches feel supported, young players are able to thrive and competition abounds is the essential core of the sport’s prospect of building a successful future. That is where Mountford came in and where, without warning, he has gone out.

Junior Orange Bowl Wrap; No Break for Junior Tennis Players

    My Tennis Recruiting Network weekly article is the Junior Orange Bowl roundup, which borrows heavily from the final story I wrote last Sunday for zootennis and the Junior Orange Bowl media report. Although my daily JOB updates were used by the Miami Herald during the week, Josh Rey, who did the 16s and 18s Orange Bowl media job for usta.com, was hired to cover the finals, and his story is here.

    I may be taking a few days off, but not many junior players have a break this time of year. The USTA Winter Nationals have begun in Arizona, with the 12s and 14s in Tucson and the 16s and 18s in the Scottsdale area. Michael Rinaldi and Bjorn Fratangelo are the top two seeds in boys 14s; Lauren Davis and Kyle McPhillips in the girls 14s. Grayson Goldin and Mackenzie McDonald are Nos. 1 and 2 in the boys 12s and Brooke Austin and Vicky Duval are the top two seeds in the girls 12s. All except Austin played deep into the Junior Orange bowl draws. The TennisLink site for the 12s and 14s is here.

    Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Clay Thompson are the boys 16s top seeds; Kate Fuller and Hanna Mar are Nos. 1 and 2 in the girls 16s. Bradley Klahn and Luke Marchese lead the field in the boys 18s and the top two seeds in the girls 18s are Keri Wong and Stephany Chang. The TennisLink site for the 16s and 18s is here.

    The first ITF Grade A of the year, the Casablanca Cup, has progressed to the quarterfinals, where the only two Americans remaining in singles, Harry Fowler and Ty Trombetta, meet each other Friday. The ITF Junior website scores aren't being updated regularly, but the tournament's own website has draws and results.

Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl Wraps; AO Wild Card, Two Les Petit As Boys Determined

    For those of you who didn't read my daily reports from the Eddie Herr and The Orange Bowl these past two weeks, I wrote a synopsis of the events for my weekly Tennis Recruiting Network contribution.


    Kent Kinnear notified me that Reo Asami and Robert Livi were the winners of the Boca Raton round robin tournament earlier this week to determine two of the boys who will travel overseas to represent the U.S. at Teen Tennis and Les Petit As. There is one selection to be made, and I'm told that it will be announced after the Junior Orange Bowl.


    And, for the second year in a row, Madison Brengle has earned the Australian Open main draw wild card. She defeated Alexa Glatch 6-3, 6-4 in the final today, according to usta.com.
