Nine Questions with Julia Boserup; Fratangelo Commits to High School Tennis; College Surprise of the Week

When Julia Boserup won the Orange Bowl in December, I had an opportunity to talk with her for SMASH magazine, in a regular feature I prepare for them, "Five Questions With..." Unfortunately, a last-minute ad led to cancellation of the story, which was scheduled to appear in the Spring issue. I didn't want the opportunity for a wider audience for her remarks to pass by, however, so I recently asked her about her Fed Cup practice partner stint and the story has resurfaced as Nine Questions, which is my weekly post for The Tennis Recruiting Network.

The Naples Daily News today published a feature story on 15-year-old Bjorn Fratangelo, the Pittsburgh, Pa. native who recently moved to Naples to train full time there and will play high school tennis for Barron Collier. There are several errors in it (not counting the typo in the headline): the Orange Bowl is in December of course, and Fratangelo lost in the third round of the 16s there after getting in as a lucky loser. (Attempts to get the newspaper to correct these mistakes have been unsuccessful). And his national title this "past January" was January 2008, when Fratangelo won the Winter Nationals 14s. But I did learn something that I forgot to ask Bjorn myself when I spoke to him after his win at the Tennis Plaza Cup last month. His first name is indeed after the Swedish superstar of the 70s and early 80s who won 11 Grand Slam titles.

And perhaps I'll start a Surprise College Result of the Week designation. It isn't the No. 14 ranked Clemson women's 4-3 win over Georgia Tech in the ACC opener for both teams yesterday, even if the Tigers' No. 1, Ani Mijacika, didn't play. No, this week's surprise is the No. 69 SMU women's 5-2 win in Fayetteville over No. 17 Arkansas. The Razorbacks' superstar, Aurelija Miseviciute, did play, and lost in a third set tiebreaker to the Mustangs' No. 1, freshman Marta Lesniak of Poland, a name to watch for this spring. SMU certainly had Arkansas outnumbered--they have 12 players on their roster, compared to six for the Razorbacks. For the complete story, see the SMU website.

Austin Visits Bollettieri's for Tennis Channel; Stories on Reynolds, DeSimone, Krajinovic and Vickery

In just a few days we'll be at Bollettieri's for the Eddie Herr and I've been hard at work on my preview, which will be available on The Tennis Recruiting Network later this week. Tracy Austin has already been to Bradenton to talk with Nick for the first installment of her show for the Tennis Channel called "Tennis Channel Academy 08." The premier was last night, but the Bollettieri segment will air again Tuesday night. The release on usta.com, which I thank a reader for bringing to my attention, mentions segments with the Everts, Pat Etcheberry, Robert Lansdorp, Carlos Rodriquez and Justine Henin. See the Tennis Channel schedule page for dates and times.

Bobby Reynolds won the Knoxville challenger Saturday, bringing his ATP ranking to a career best of 70, but this Knoxville News article doesn't just report on the match. There is also much on Reynolds' upcoming wedding with details of how he and his fiance met while student-athletes at Vanderbilt.

The San Diego Union-Tribune follows their area's high school tennis closely, and Gabrielle DeSimone's second straight CIF sectional win merits this article. DeSimone beat Lacey Smyth 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(7) in the final, so there was obviously plenty of drama to report.

Sixteen-year-old Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, retired from his Knoxville semifinal match against Reynolds with blisters, but this story, from the English language version of the Serbian tabloid Blic, says he hopes to compete in the Cancun Challenger this week, having received a wild card into the main draw. Krajinovic is still listed as an entrant in the Eddie Herr, but depending on his foot and how long he's in Cancun, I wouldn't say he's certain to play in Bradenton.

There are a lot of big names thrown around in the Krajinovic story--Agassi and Federer chief among them, and that's also true of this story about Sachia Vickery, who, like Krajinovic is now a Bollettieri student. From a Guyana publication called Kaieteur News, the story invokes the Williams sisters, and Serena in particular, who has long been a source of inspiration to Vickery.

On Tuesday, look for this month's Coaches Q & A, in which Harold Solomon discusses the issue of taking a break from tennis.

Paz Signs with Renaissance; Cako Update; Simidian Wins New Jersey High School Title

U.S. Open Junior Championship finalist Gabriela Paz of Venezuela has signed with Renaissance Tennis, the South Florida sports management firm. This isn't breaking news--the RTM website's announcement is dated September 26--but often there isn't any way to know if a young player has signed with an agency unless you ask them, so a formal release is helpful. Renaissance is one of the newer agencies, with Norman Canter, Richard DeVries and Tarik Benhabiles as Managing Director, Chairman of the Board and Director of Tennis respectively. Clients include Flavia Pennetta, Peng Shuai, Alisa Kleybanova, Benjamin Becker and Benedikt Dorsch. Valeria Solovieva of Russia is the only junior listed. I believe her father is the Director of Physical Fitness. Another new agency that's been formed recently is Mamba International, which represents Somdev Devvarman, Treat Huey and Takanyi Garanganga. Not surprisingly, it's based in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Jacqueline Cako continues to receive extensive coverage on her tennis career, and this story, from the Daily Herald in Everett, Wash., has comments from her mother and her coach, Russ Bucklin. Bucklin is quoted as saying:

"Predicting potential is difficult," Bucklin acknowledged. "So with that disclaimer, I'd say that every three months I have to up my guess. In the beginning I would have said, 'If she can make the top 125 (in the world) and play for five years on the pro tour and break even (financially), that's really good.' But then she starting blowing up the junior (international) rankings and we thought, 'Well, maybe she can make it inside the top 100." But right now she's already playing pretty close to even with the top 100 players.

"So what I think now is that she's going to make the top 50," he said. "And I think she's going to hang there for a while."

And finally, a New Jersey weekly, The Leader, recognized Amy Simidian, who will be playing tennis at Penn State next fall, for winning the NJSIAA singles tennis championship as a student at Becton High School.

Kandath to Stanford; SoCal High School Tennis; Northwestern Women Have New Assistant

If you went to the Tennis Recruiting Network this morning, you saw that Matt Kandath has chosen Stanford over Duke, Princeton and Virginia for his college tennis. Blue chip Walker Kehrer is also listed as committed to the Cardinal, while Denis Lin and Fillip Pogostkin are also interested, so it looks like another good recruiting year for John Whitlinger.

Kandath is a two-time New York state high school tennis champion, which segues into this story from San Diego's North County Times about the pros and cons of high school tennis in Southern California. The reporter, Scott Bair, centers the story on Gabrielle DeSimone, but he talks with many local high school coaches about the challenges that level of competition presents for nationally ranked players. Unlike college tennis, which will always offer stiffer competition to a junior player, high school tennis can often involve players with much less skill, so the social and community aspects become more important.

2008 ITA National Coach of the Year Claire Pollard of Northwestern announced last week that Jackie Holden, her former doubles partner when they won the NCAA title in 1989 at Mississippi State, will join the Wildcats as assistant coach. Holden, a highly regarded national coach at the LTA for the past three years, replaces Dave Mullins, who accepted the head coaching position at Oklahoma this summer. Pollard's team have won the Big Ten title all ten of the years she has been head coach.

And finally, the ITF Grade 2 in South Carolina is well underway. See the TennisLink site for complete draws.

State High School Tennis in Midwest; Glatch Takes Second Straight $50,000 Challenger in Canada

The high school tennis season in the Midwest culminates in the state championships this time of year, and I've located four stories detailing results in Illinois and Ohio, which contests its girls championships in the fall, and Michigan and Indiana, which have boys championships this time of year.

Elizabeth Epstein of Chicago won her second straight state title defeating Nida Hamilton in the final. It was an exceptionally strong field in Illinois this year, featuring blue chips Rachael White, Courtney Dolehide, Kristen Dodge and Jasmine Minor, but Epstein triumphed again. The Chicago Tribune had this story on her victory.

I had linked to a story last month about freshmen Kyle McPhillips and Lauren Davis playing high school tennis in Ohio. Davis did win a state championship, in Division II, but McPhillips was upset in the semifinals of Division I and Kara Sherwood won that championship. The complete News-Herald article is here.

In boys action, Aaron Pfister of Grand Blanc won the Division I boys championship in Michigan last weekend, and the Flint Journal followed his quest for the championship, no doubt much sweeter after failing to take a title in the two previous state competitions where he reached the final but lost. And in Indiana, sophomore Nick Chappell capped an undefeated season with a state title, according to this story in the Indianapolis Star.

In pro news, 19-year-old Alexa Glatch won her second consecutive $50,000 event in Canada and the Tennis Canada website immediately posted this account. The downside for Glatch (a double downside for the finals loser, Alberta Brianti of Italy) is having to give up a qualifying spot in the Bell Challenger, the WTA event in Canada that started this weekend.
