Tulsa, OK--
Everything went well in my travels to Tulsa, and I even had time to unpack before the "welcome reception" that was really a sitdown dinner at the Doubletree, host hotel of the tournament. There was very little in the way of speeches, just a few brief remarks of welcome from Vince Westbrook, director of tennis at the University of Tulsa and David Benjamin, Executive Director of the ITA.
I chatted briefly with Alex Clayton, the Stanford freshman who qualified today with a three-set win over Texas freshman Ed Corrie, and with the Shields brothers of Boise State, who are both in the main draw of singles, but had lost their final doubles qualifying match today. Conversations were short because both Clayton and Clancy Shields have 8 a.m. matches, not uncommon in juniors, but quite rare in levels above that. Clayton plays Ole Miss's Robbye Poole and Clancy Shields plays No. 4 seed Greg Ouellette of Florida.
The complete singles draw is here; the doubles draw is here. There will be two rounds of singles tomorrow and a round of doubles, making for a very full day.

The women also completed their qualifying today in California, and Georgia Tech freshman Maya Johansson made it through prequalifying and qualifying, winning six matches to earn a spot in the main.
